Grand Rapids is in Kent Count, and in the West-Southwest Region. Grand Rapids is north of Kalamazoo between Muskegon and Lansing, along Interstate 96 on the banks of the Grand River.
In 1800's the Grand Rapids area was settled by missionaries and fur traders who lived along the river with the Ottawa indians. Among the traders was a gentleman named Louis Campau who originally came to trade furs with the indians. In 1826 heset up a trading post in the area that would later become Grand Rapids. Camau purchased the land $90 from the federal government. The first furniture factory was in place by 1850 and many shops started selling the furniture. The Grand River generated the power for the company and also brought the logs for making the furniture. By 1876, Grand Rapids became known worldwide for fine furniture production.
In 1945, Grand Rapids became the first city in the United States to add floride to the water.
Today, Grand Rapids is still considered the world leader in office furniture production. Reflecting a diversified ethnic mix, Grand Rapids holds festivals throughout the year. The city boasts more than 2,000 acres of parklands
